Forklift Winch - Winches are mechanical tools that can wind out, or pull up the tension of a wire rope, rope, wire cable or cable. These tools, in its most simple form, are constructed of a spool and a hand crank. More complicated winches are found at the heart of machinery such as tow trucks, elevators and steam shovels. At times the spool can be called the winch drum. Elaborate designs have gear assemblies which can be driven by internal, hydraulic, electric or pneumatic combustion drives. Some winches can include a mechanical brake or a solenoid brake or a pawl and ratchet mechanism in order to stop it from unwinding unless the pawl is retracted.
Generally, the rope is stored on the winch. There is similar machinery referred to as a capstan that does not store the rope. In sailing, when a line is trimmed on a sailboat, the crew member operates the handle of the winch with one hand while tailing the other so as to maintain tension on the turns. Various winches have a stripper or cleat so as to maintain tension. These designs are referred to as "self-tailing" winches.
Frequently, winches are utilized backstage as part of the mechanism so as to arrange background in large theatrical productions. Lots of times the winches are actually embedded in the stage floor and used to transfer big set pieces on and off stage.
Recently, winches have been fabricated in particular designs for snow and water sports. This new generation of winches is designed to be able to pull riders swiftly across a body of snow or of water. This could stimulate a riding experience which is typically supplied by a wave runner, boat or a snow mobile.
